Aleksandra is a Toronto deejay whose style will simply win you over. She sent me this mix to check out and I was drawn immediately. Although it is not minimal or techno right from the start (she opens with deep tech house and some soulful house), it picks up its pace once you reach the middle. Second half is more repetitive tech/techno that will remind you of something Villalobos would play. I would not recommend skipping one second of this set, it flows nicely together and takes you on a journey that ends with you feeling like you’re about to go out and party; really gets your adrenaline goin’. I enjoyed this set so much, that I would label it a must download to anyone who comes here with an open mind and a desire to experience something new with tiny touch of minimal. You won’t be dissapointed one bit, trust me on this one.

When thinking of Global Underground it's almost impossible not to think of Nick Warren. He's delivered seven mixes for the label over the past decade and has become synonymous with not only the GU brand, but progressive house in general. But after the landmark Reykjavik mix and the excellent follow-up, Shanghai, the last installment, Paris, sounded like a step backwards. With an unprecedented eighth mix, Lima, hitting the shelves, Warren has a chance to prove there's still life in prog yet.
This time around Warren abandons the usual formula of starting with ambient grooves in favour of keeping it dance floor-centric from the off. In this respect Lima flows like one long set. The first disc quickly sets the deeply progressive tone with "Seduction" and "An Why E," both from young producer Nils Nurnberg. It soon becomes clear that the usual spaced out melodies are present, but there's a new emphasis on subtlety and percussion. Quality tracks such as "Cassini" by Glide and "Kurs Zjazdowy" by Petersky provide the warmth that Warren fans are familiar with as well as bringing a slight tech influence to the proceedings.
The first disc is an enjoyable standalone mix, and a definite leap forward from Paris, but the second starts well only to disappointingly slip into a more predictable sound. Tracks such as "I Am Trying" by Nicolo Vivarelli and "Siberian Transit" by Martin Brodin make you feel like you could be listening to any one of Warren's last four GU mixes. There's still enough quality here to make it a decent listen, though—of note are the trippy chimes of "Revelation" by Etiket and Robert Babicz's remix of "Spaceman" by Way Out West.
Warren could be accused of not delving into more contemporary styles like his peers John Digweed and Danny Howells. But with every DJ and their dog turning to minimal and tech-house, it's reassuring to see a stalwart still seeking the best progressive records around—all tracks on the album are exclusive—rather than jumping on the bandwagon. While we may never see another mix like Reykjavik, progressive is far from dead. Lima is proof.

The German photographer and artist Andreas Gursky and Sven Väth know each other for quite some time already. Now, Gursky has published a cycle of large-sized pictures that pick ‘Cocoon’ out as the central theme: The Cocoon pictures sre referring to the current club culture: Gursky uses the big Techno events Cocoon is staging as drafts. The architectural frame of his works is referring to the design of the CocoonClub Frankfurt. The spatial concept was developed by Techno Dj and musician Sven Väth, together with the design agency 3deluxe.
Gursky’s pictures refer to the graphic templates and thus form an ideal approach to the original CocoonClub. “Cocoon I” was already the cover of the ‘Cocoon Morphs Tokyo’ CD, which was released in spring in Japan exclusively. In autumn, this CD containing only exclusive tracks is to be released in Europe, too.
However, Cocoon fans don’t have to wait until then: six of the seven tracks of the CD will be released on three 12″ vinyl records (that form the total of Gursky’s picture when put together) in order to celebrate the 50th vinyl release of Cocoon Recordings.Here, excellent electronic music meets the work of the most important contemporary German artist worldwide – again, Cocoon explores new frontiers and combines art forms of the 21st century.

Lee Jones crafts an understated mix of new and old on this week's RA podcast.
As the sole man behind Hefner and one half of My My, Lee Jones has had quite a career in electronic music already. But as he gets set for the release of his debut album under his own name, he seems to be feeling a bit pensive. How else do you explain away the slow and brooding start—and end—to his RA podcast? The end title to Cool Hand Luke? Consider these heart strings pulled.
Despite the moody bookends, Jones crafts a mix here that glides through modern minimalism with aplomb. Like his work with My My, this mix is understated, but the more you listen to it, the more you grow to hear the skill that guides it along its path. The same goes for that debut album, Electric Frank, which has been seeing tons of play at RA towers. You never seem to need to hear it, but everytime you put it on, it's mighty hard to think of any other album that you'd want to be listening to instead. [Read More]

Guy J has emerged over the course of the last two years to represent an intrinsic part of the Israeli dance music juggernaut that has been steadily powering through clubland in recent times. Along with fellow countrymen Guy Gerber, Sholmi Aber, Chaim and Gel Abril, Guy has been at the forefront of a movement back towards the melody rich sounds on which House music is based.
Guy’s productions, with their driving beats, shimmering synths and journey-like qualities, embody characteristics from all manner of House music. Guy states “I didn’t set out to write an album – I just wrote tracks when I was in different moods, hence each track having different types of genres, different influences.” He adds, “This is the album I wanted to make… it has a warm sound… it’s very sexy and really tells a story.”
On this, his debut artist album, Guy fully exploits the opportunity to explore the length and breadth of his creative capacity. Alongside the dance floor orientated cuts on which he has built his reputation, Guy straddles moods of ambient, techno and electronica whilst constantly maintaining a melodic and highly emotive core. Anyone who appreciated the majesty of Nathan Fake’s ‘Drowning in a Sea of Love’ will instantly feel at home with ‘Esperanza’, as would fans of the Kompakt or Border Community sound where the focus is first and foremost on musicality.
‘Indigo Fields’ opens up the album perfectly and immediately encapsulates the rich tapestry of sound for which Guy J is famed. Following on, ‘Nebula’ highlights the dancefloor focused underbelly of the album by marrying dark, driving bass with Chicago-influenced synth-stabs that leave you doubtless of Guy’s sonic capabilities. ‘Geko’ again picks up a strand of the classic house blueprint albeit this time in slower and more twisted fashion. Guy’s first single ‘Under Pressure’ appears on the album in a slightly more restrained album version. Flourishes of synthesis and noise appear and disappear as the track travels patiently through peeks and troughs of intensity.
By the time ‘Druma’ jerks into the frame you realise you are experiencing the work of a genuine musical talent. Epic slabs of sound are stacked atop glitchy lo-fi drums which results in a listening experience that simply swallows you whole. Closing track ‘Esperanza’ completes the journey and in archetypal Guy J fashion it’s a musically dense trip that is dynamic enough to keep you hanging until the very last beat.
